Ingredients:

  • 2 cups sushi rice, cooked and seasoned (sushi vinegar recommended)
  • 1 sheet nori seaweed
  • 6 oz sushi-grade salmon, thinly sliced
  • 1 ripe avocado, thinly sliced
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened (optional: flavored cream cheese like chives or everything bagel)
  • 1 tbsp wasabi paste (optional)
  • Pickled ginger, for garnish
  • Soy sauce, for dipping

Directions:

Step 1

Prepare the Sushi Rice

Cook the sushi rice according to package instructions. While still warm, gently mix in sushi vinegar (or a mixture of rice vinegar, sugar, and salt) to season. Spread the rice evenly onto a bamboo mat lined with plastic wrap.

Step 2

Assemble the Roll

Place a sheet of nori seaweed on the bamboo mat, shiny side down. Spread a thin layer of seasoned sushi rice over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top.

Step 3

Layer the Flavor

Spread a thin layer of softened cream cheese horizontally across the center of the rice. Top with thinly sliced avocado and salmon. Add a dab of wasabi paste (optional) for a spicy kick.

Step 4

Roll and Slice

Using the bamboo mat as a guide, carefully begin rolling the sushi away from you, using the plastic wrap to keep the roll tight. Gently press the roll to secure the filling. Wet the reserved nori border to seal the roll. Use a sharp knife to cut the roll into even slices.

Step 5

Serve and Enjoy

Moisten the knife blade with water between cuts to ensure clean slices. Arrange the Alaska roll slices on a plate with pickled ginger and a small dish of soy sauce for dipping.

Tips:

  • For a vegetarian option, substitute the salmon with cucumber or another favorite vegetable.
  • If the nori seaweed is too stiff, toast it briefly over a low flame for a few seconds to make it more pliable.
  • Wetting the knife blade with water between cuts helps prevent the rice from sticking.
  • Feel free to experiment with different fillings and flavors to create your own customized Alaska roll!
